EASTBOURNE 42 LIONS 48

LEICESTER have a handy lead in their first major final in 44-years ahead of Sunday’s second Leg at home (5pm).

They beat Eastbourne by six-points in Sussex thanks to a late rally after a tense affair and are in a great position to win the Championship Shield.

Now they are looking to get the job done at the Paul Chapman and Sons Arena (Beaumont Park) on Sunday when a big crowd is expected - fans are advised to arrive early for the 5pm start.

Scott Nicholls won two of the last three heats to help the Watling JCB Lions pull ahead in front of a bumper crowd.

Guest Josh Pickering teamed up with Connor Mountain for a decisive 5-1 in the penultimate heat which ensured a great result for Leicester.

But boss Stewart Dickson, in his first season in charge at the club, is guarding against complacency.

He said: “I’m proud of the boys, it was a seven-man performance and that’s what we needed. Joe Lawlor played his part as much as Scott.

“It’s a fantastic result but we have to treat Sunday as a one-off. This is a very good Eastbourne side and we thank them for their welcome, we are always treated very well here.

“The job is only half done. I’m naturally delighted and I cannot pretend otherwise but I’m not taking anything for granted.

“We need the Leicester fans to come and get behind us, it’s a big occasion and I’m going to be at the track early. I can’t wait.

“Scott’s wins late on were fantastic and we are obviously the favourites now but anything can happen in Speedway and we have to stay focussed.

“Leicester Speedway is in a good place, it’s all positive and we are all enjoying our season.”
